Barnswalow and vitamin D - VARA Vroege Vogels (Early Birds)

Psychiatrist Willem Bohlmeijer has e theory. According to his theory birds like the barnswallow migrate to Africa to meet their vitamin D needs. In psychiatry it is known there is a connection between depression and lack of sufficient vitamin D. Sunlight is important to humans and we can raise our vitamin D by sunbathing. Barnswallows however lack sufficient bare skin and retrieve the vitamin D from their diet of insects. At this moment this hypothesis is scientifically tested.

Willem Bohlmeijer makes a documentary about his theory. On the basis of the migration of the barnswallow from the “Achterhoek” in the Netherlands till the winter residence in Zambia in this documentary the knowledge and the newest scientific insights on the meaning of vitamin D for the human body are explained.
